Barely a day goes by that a new Social Media site doesn’t surface. It’s impossible to keep up with all of them. But the question I’m asked by many small and mid-size businesses is not “should I use social media”, but
“How should I use social media most effectively for my business”?
The challenge is that there are so many choices of networks and mediums to engage in it can be difficult to decide where to focus your attention.
Linkedin has become the defacto standard in business for online networking. It is effectively the MySpace or Facebook of the professional world. It’s easy to setup, easy to use, and helps you stay connected with clients, prospects and colleagues. You can provide as much information about yourself or as little as you would like.
How does it work? Linkedin is built around the concept of your connections and creating an online network of those connections. You invite people to “join your network” and others reciprocate. You can also endorse & recommend others and they in turn, can do the same for you.
Intimidating at first? Perhaps.
But it’s also quite addictive. Linkedin, much like Facebook, “finds” people you might know. And it’s incredibly interesting who it turns up.
So, how can you use a tool like Linkedin to help your business? You can use your connections to help you:
- Stay connected to customers and clients by inviting them to join your network
- Get introduced to prospects you’d like to meet via the connections in your network
- Find good employees thru your network
- Find highly recommended vendors and suppliers
- Last, but not least, it can help you land a new career
So, if you don’t have a Linkedin account, go ahead and set one up. It’s really easy. Be sure to define the different elements of your profile too and you’ll soon see that you are all “Linkedin ”.
