An Intro to Mobile Barcodes

The barcode goes mobile.  I want to share some great ways to use these little gems to drive traffic to your web site and improve your customers' overall experience with your brand.  You see barcodes in magazine ads and print marketing material and even larger than life in NYC at Times Square.  This geometric gem is the magic key to linking offline traffic to online revenue.

barcodeMobile barcodes are read by the camera on your cell phone.  Smartphone users with the barcode reader app installed on their phone simply take a picture of the barcode.  This picture initiates a specific action on your phone: Open a web page on your mobile browser; start a video; initiate a phone call to your business; send a tweet; create an appointment on your outlook calendar or initiate a purchase.

Barcodes can be placed and scanned on virtually any media:  Business cards, print ads, company vehicles, billboards, catalogs, name badges, emails, web pages,  t-shirts, banners, stickers, etc.

Case Studies for Mobile Barcodes:
  • When added to your web contact page, it can initiate a phone call.
  • On name badges, it initiates a LinkedIn "join network" request.
  • In a magazine ad, it opens a mobile browser and shows video about your product.
  • On a House For Sale sign, it launches a video tour of the house on your phone.
  • In your print catalog, it initiates a phone call to your call center for ordering.
  • On your business card, it enables your contact info to easily be added to outlook.
  • At your tradeshow booth, it enables prospects to easily request more information.
  • On product packaging, it launches detailed installation instructions.
  • On your product, it initiates a call to customer service for after sale support.
  • Next to the Coho Salmon at the grocery store delivers a recipe to your customers' inbox.
  • It can enable "save the date" reminders in outlook on event marketing material, emails or retail signage.
  • On company vehicles, it initiates a call to your company from new customers.
  • It can deliver  "digital surprises" such as music downloads, giveaways, discounts on mobile barcodes.

Your customers need a barcode reader app on their phone to read your secret messages.  There are several different mobile barcode technologies out now and the battle is on to see which one will become the defacto standard.
